The Rise of Skywalker already got a Christmas Day 2019 box office boost a week earlier, meaning its 11th day was only $15.3 million, down 44% from The Last Jedi at the same point. The Last Jedi generated a massive $27.4 million on its 11th day of release, which coincided with Christmas Day in 2017.
While The Rise of Skywalker was able to use the holidays to boost its first week of daily grosses above The Last Jedi's at the same point, its second week of individual daily grosses began to fall sharply behind The Last Jedi's daily grosses. However, as the subsequent days wore on, the picture started to look less rosy for The Rise of Skywalker. In response to this turn of events, numerous media outlets began to run headlines declaring that The Rise of Skywalker was now assured to surpass the lifetime domestic gross of The Last Jedi. By the time The Rise of Skywalker was just seven days into its run, it had narrowed the gap between it and The Last Jedi from 19.5% to a tiny 2.5%. The Rise of Skywalker coinciding its first week of release with Christmas Day turned out to be a wise choice since it allowed the film to generate massive daily grosses and pick up ground against The Last Jedi.
